Here are our frequently asked questions, find answers below or get in touch.
How does a heat pump work?
A heat pump absorbs heat from the outside air (even when it’s cold), boosts that heat using a compressor, and transfers it into your home through radiators or underfloor heating. Because it moves heat rather than creating it, it uses much less energy than traditional boilers.
What is a heat pump?
A heat pump is a low-carbon heating system that takes heat from outside (air, ground, or water) and uses it to warm your home and hot water. It runs on electricity and works a bit like a fridge in reverse.
How efficient is a heat pump system?
Heat pumps are very efficient. For every 1 unit of electricity used, they typically produce 3–4 units of heat. This is often described as 300–400% efficiency, compared to gas boilers at around 85–90%.
How much can I save with a heat pump?
Savings depend on your current heating system, insulation, and energy tariffs. Homes replacing old oil, LPG, or inefficient gas boilers often see the biggest savings. You’ll also benefit from more stable running costs and protection against rising fossil fuel prices.
Do you need to be registered to install heat pumps?
Yes. In the UK, installers must be MCS certified to fit heat pumps and to allow homeowners to access government grants like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Always use an MCS-registered installer.
What are the key benefits?
• Lower energy bills (especially compared to oil or LPG)
• Much lower carbon emissions
• Highly efficient and reliable
• Eligible for government grants
• Provides both heating and hot water
• Long lifespan with minimal maintenance
